This is our most popular Rotorua Tour and offers you a full day of exciting discovery as you experience a unique and special part of New Zealand. We will fill your day with interesting stories, educational facts and great photo opportunities that will leave you with lasting memories. Also important is the fact that we are fun and friendly, always willing to go the extra mile to ensure you have a great day out.
Let us tell you a little about your day with your Rotorua tour specialist! Mount Maunganui and Papamoa beaches: After meeting you at the Port of Tauranga we begin the tour with a gentle drive past Mount Maunganui and along the coast showcasing our stunning white sandy beaches and telling you a little about the region, its history and significance to the Maori people. We also explain the volcanic history that has shaped this land and the remnants it has left behind. Kiwi 360 Orchard: Our first stop is a working Kiwi fruit orchard where we get amongst the vines, taste the green and gold kiwi fruit and sample kiwi fruit wines, juices and liqueurs. We explain the significance of the kiwi fruit to the region and tell you a little about its growing cycle. This is also a great spot for a bit of souvenir shopping! After this its back on the road as we wind our way through the rolling countryside past the dense pine forest plantations, explaining the significance of forestry industry to New Zealand. Okere Falls: These magnificent waterfalls are the location of the first hydro electric power station for Rotorua. The grade 5 rapids see thousands of rafters plummet over the roaring waterfalls each year. If we are lucky enough to time it right we get a chance to watch them come over the falls from a viewing point amongst the native bush where we also learn a little about the naive plants and their importance to the Maori people. Te Puia: The next stop is Te Puia, the main attraction. Te Puia is part of the Whakarewarewa geothermal valley and home of the famous Pohutu Geyser, the largest geyser in the Southern Hemisphere. We will guide you around the reserve taking you up close to the geysers, steaming lakes, boiling mud pools, cooking holes, the waka (Maori war canoe), the replica Maori village, Pikirangi, and the kiwi bird house. Maori Cultural experience: After an authentic greeting or wero from a Maori warrior in traditional dress, you are called into the traditional meeting house by the female kuia (female tribal elder) to see one of the best Maori cultural performances in New Zealand. The concert will showcase Maori dance and song and of course, the Haka! At Te Puia we will also visit the arts and craft institute for wood carving and flax weaving demonstrations. Rotorua City highlights: We will drive through the Government Gardens, home to the first health spa in New Zealand and you can wander amongst the stunning flower displays and marvel at the beautiful architecture. After this we will drive along the Rotorua lakefront inhabited by lots of birdlife and a favourite recreation spot for locals and tourists. Time permitting: (depending on the departure time of your ship) - Kuirau Park with numerous geothermal hot spots amongst the parklands, a trip to view the pristine Blue and Green Lakes, and/or a stop at Hamurana Springs where the water is so clear you can often see the trout enjoying the pure cool spring water which flows out at 4.5 million litres per hour (1 million gallons). Rotorua City: We will visit the Government Gardens. This area was gifted to the New Zealand Government by the local Maori tribe the Te Arawa for "the benefit of the people of the world". The impressive Elizabethan style building dominating the grounds was the first investment by the NZ Government in tourism. It has gone from being a health spa facility to now housing the Rotorua museum. We will point out some of the features of the gardens and stop for photos amongst the impressive flower beds. Rotorua Lakes: Rotorua has a staggering 16 lakes and we will visit 3 of them on our tour. The Blue and Green Lakes, like all the Rotorua lakes are craters, calderas or valleys blocked by lava flows. The Blue and Green lakes are nestled amongst steep green hills of native vegetation and are indeed spectacular. We will explain why they are different colours and take you to a viewing point for some lovely photos. The next stop is Sulphur Bay on Lake Rotorua, stunning in its own barren way. This is a unique ecological area where the birds and vegetation have adapted to the acidic conditions. We will talk about why the waters are so milky and how geysers and boiling mud pools evolve. We and might even see some boiling hot spots on the waters edge. Kuirau Park: After driving along the Rotorua lake front we stop at the town "hot spot" Kuirau Park. We will wander through the park and get up close to some of the active geothermal spots. See bubbling mud pools, steaming lakes and crystal clear hot springs. You can even soak your feet in the thermal foot bath and feel how soft and silky they feel afterwards!
